Insulin syringes
Insulin syringes differ from standard disposable syringes in a few specifics: the needle is fixed with no Luer connection, the barrel is marked in insulin units rather than millilitres, and the gauge is much finer (27G to 31G). Patients who inject insulin daily need that finer needle. These syringes are not interchangeable with standard Luer syringes.

U-100 vs U-40: U-100 syringes (100 units per ml) are the Kenyan standard for modern insulin formulations including Actrapid, Mixtard, and Glargine. U-40 syringes (40 units per ml) are an older format still in limited use with some animal and older human insulin products - always match syringe scale to insulin concentration to avoid dosing errors.

Auto-disable (AD) syringes
Auto-disable syringes have a plunger that locks permanently after one use - refilling is not possible. They are the WHO and KEPI standard for vaccination campaigns, and Kenya's Expanded Programme on Immunisation uses them for polio, measles, and COVID-19 doses.

Needle gauge guide
Needle gauge (G) is the outer diameter - higher numbers mean thinner needles. The right gauge matters because it affects how a medication is absorbed and how much the patient feels the needle. The most common gauges stocked in Kenya are 21G, 23G, and 25G.

Luer-Lock vs Luer-Slip
Luer-Lock syringes have a threaded collar that screws onto the needle hub. The lock prevents accidental disconnection during injection and is recommended for IV administration and high-pressure procedures. Most Kenyan hospitals now specify Luer-Lock as standard.
Luer-Slip (also called Luer-Taper) syringes hold the needle by friction only. They attach and detach faster, which suits high-throughput settings like vaccination campaigns and lab sample drawing. They are not suitable for IV push or high-pressure procedures.
